Effectiveness of Advertisements in Social Networking Websites

icon1 Posted by admin in Internet on 12 8th, 2008 | 2 responses

Following developments in Internet, significant increase in social networking websites is being observed. Websites such as “Facebook” and “Yonja” began attracting more and more visitors and members. Briefly, high attraction, rapid development of websites and foreign websites getting a huge slice for this cake is the status quo..

Under these circumstances, it didn’t take too long for these websites to become advertising platforms. Websites have begun to make a great deal of money upon advertisements via “Google” or their own websites and market is exacerbating. ( By saying a “great deal” of money I meant these sites are earning more money compared to other internet channels, but we all know that even most expensive internet advertising activities are stil cheap) :D

However, the main theme I’d like to put emphasis on is the effectiveness of this kind of advertising. Well… you may place ads on “Facebook”, “Yonja” or “MSN” but how effective are we on these platforms? How much feedback are we receiving? I find the answers to these questions vital.

When we look at general opinion, we can see that advertisers believe in these platforms and place their ads excessively.

My opinion is somewhat different; I have made use of almost all kinds of advertisement areas on behalf of the company I had been working for as an advertiser. I’ve paid attention to feedbacks. Unfortunately I have observed that feedback from these websites with high expantancies have been insufficient compared to their costs. It is with no doubt that the message in bannners was important and it was clear that feedbacks from all kinds of advertisements whether small or large was low. I have made my next advertisement plan in the light of this information.

Why was the feedback low? Below are my opinions regarding this matter. You may concur object or think different of my opinions. Your comments are welcomed.

  • First of all, the focus here is always the site and your friends.
  • Your purpose for using the site is clear, you have entered the site for chatting with your friends or uploading photos etc.
  • It seem as though ad perception decreases to low levels, ads become invisible ora re ignored even if perceived.
  • Even if a person clicks on these ads there are people who are waiting to char with us, thus ad perception time decreases:)
  • Think about it… Would it be possible to read the add thoroughly when you are chatting with your friends on “msn” or “facebook” considering the nonstop “Hey! Are you there? Where are you? I’m stil waiting! I’m gonna leave now! remarks flying around your desktop. I don’t think so!?! J

In conclusion I don’t believe that ads on social networking websites are too effective. Well it does also depend on your nature of access. If you are not advertising on a prominent area I would have to warn you not to keep your expectations high for receiving large feedbacks.

Good post. I found your site through viralogy.com and enjoyed reading it. I think a lot of people don’t click on the ads because there are too many “little chunks” of things to do on the interface. On other sites, if it was an article, its the article, and ads. On facebook, its 20 widgiets, and ads. Ads can’t compete.
